So today definitely didn't go as planned, but I think it worked out the way it was supposed to! Not sure if everyone knows, but I am the newest employee (actually I think I was the first employee) of Smackers! It's a new frozen yogurt shop in Columbus. The have 10 amazing flavors (and will be rotating more) and 50 toppings! I've never been to a yogurt shop like this before, where you pay for how much it weighs, but I only have high hopes for this place. The first day open is Monday (yep, Valentine's Day). They are anticipating being very busy for the first month and with all the hype they've received from facebook & twitter, I anticipate them being very busy as well. If nothing else, all the base spouses will be in supporting their fellow coworkers.
Ok, long story short, training was at 9 am. That was before we got 3 inches of snow last night. It takes me 5 minutes on a bad day to get to work so I headed out the door around 9:45 only to walk out to my car completely covered in snow and ice! I then proceeded to call Chase and have him come help me scrape everything off (which we all know really means he did all the work). I was already dressed for work though and my sweater wasn't very conducive to scraping snow. After about 15 minutes of scraping (yes that would make it 9:00 now), I raced to work, well I tried to race. I was stuck behind someone from Texas driving 20 in a 35 on dry roads. I get there and not one person is there, I text my boss and training has been moved, she apologized for not getting the text to me and I proceeded back home. I called Kelsey on my way because I was going to tell her how crazy the last 20 minutes had been and said hello to what sounded like an asleep/previously crying/something wrong Kelsey. At this point I got worried. She told me everything was fine and that I should go home. I don't think she realizes just what all I will actually do for her. I ensure her that the roads are fine and I can come her way if need be and as soon as I walk in the bathroom to talk to Chase (he was shaving) I get a phone call. I think I was on base in less than 10 minutes. I walk in and poor Kelsey looks miserable. I take over control of Alex and get her out the door to the clinic. Some tests, an ambulance ride, some more tests in the ER and an unexpected diagnosis later she's on her way back home. Alex was an angel. He cried when mommy first left, but I think that was because he was worried about her. He then proceeded to eat and sleep the rest of the afternoon.
I headed off to training around 2. I get to Smackers and there are quite a few people there! They were trying to get everyone trained in a short amount of time. I filled out all the boring paperwork and was paired with a girl named Jen, who I can already tell that I'm going to love working with! She is exactly where I was a year ago. She has only been base about 2 months so everything is still new to her. She already enlisted me to help show her the ropes so I have a feeling our down times at work will be spent telling the countless stories of UPT life. We got the tour of everything; the kitchen, freezers and fridges FULL of frozen yogurt, sprinkles, and every chopped up candy bar you can imagine. We then learned how to use the cash register. Very simple but in a rush with a line of people I can see how it could be easy to punch the wrong button for something. There were lots of laughs today and you can tell just how much the owners want to make this a fun place for everyone in town to hang out. There will be free wifi, music streaming in and when it gets warmer there will be theme nights (disco, 80's). Now i'm just anxious to see how opening day will go. I have no idea quite what to expect. I've never worked in a food service restaurant before but it can't be too much harder than working in a bank right?
So with that I will bid you adieu. I might have to start writing daily about my experiences at work or what stands out to me while I'm there. Have I mentioned that I'm so happy that tomorrow is Friday? It feels like this week has taken forever to pass. Not that I'm excited about this weekend for any special reason, I just need another Saturday and Sunday. Oh and as of today, Chase isn't scheduled to fly Sunday anymore!!!!!!!! He is supposed to check this week though so it will definitely be a stressful week for him. Ok adieu for real this time! It's my turn in my Scrabble game with Kelsey! :)
